UK Tech titans team up to tackle climate change and boost green investment

There’s a rumble on tech roundabout, as fifteen of the UK’s largest tech firms have formed a “Tech Zero taskforce”, dedicated to tackling climate change by reaching net zero, whilst turbo-boosting investment in all things green.

The government’s sustainable business council will work alongside the fifteen companies including Bulb, Babylon, Citymapper, Faculty, Gocardless, Habito, Hopin, Moneysupermarket, Olio, Onfido, Revolut, Starling Bank, what3words and Wise.

Andrew Griffith MP will ally with Bulb’s chief executive and co-founder Hayden Wood who will lead the taskforce.

Matt Warman, Digital Infrastructure Minister, said “The UK is the tech capital of Europe so it’s great to see our pioneering tech companies come together to combat climate change.  Through COP26 and the G7 we are taking a leading role to drive global action and we continue to support our digital sector to use its innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity to tackle one of the greatest challenges of our time.”

The UN Cop26 Climate Conference is taking place in Glasgow in November 2021, for which Alok Sharma, the former business secretary, has been made president of the event.

With the COP26 summit later this year, for which former business secretary Alok Sharma has been appointed president, the UK has committed to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Launching their own summit in a matter of months, the tech bosses now aim to secure a minimum of 1000 more companies signed up before COP26.

Hayden Wood says “Tech Zero will go beyond targets – we want to boost access to finance and make the UK the number one destination for green investment in the world.”

Tech has enjoyed years of enthusiastic investment, and now that the green economy is getting its rightful share of the limelight this dynastic union makes a lot of sense.
