Lord Anthony Bamford, Chairman of JCB, Europe’s largest manufacturer of construction equipment, has expressed he is ‘intensely interested’ in alternative fuels, singling out Hydrogen as ‘the fuel of the future’.
The announcement comes as JCB celebrates 75 years at the top of its tree.
“We make upward of 100,000 diesel-powered vehicles each year. Our diesel engines use 50 per cent less fuel than a decade ago, they are much more efficient and emission levels have gone down.”
But Lord Bamford accepts “fossil fuels are badly regarded for all kinds of reasons, and we must eventually get rid of them”.

As a result JCB is now ‘rigorously testing’ the world’s first hydrogen-powered excavator, as it develops zero and low-carbon technology for use across its businesses in the heavy construction equipment sector.
